Sean O’Dowd, Master Potter and entrepreneur is the person behind Ballydougan Pottery at Bloomvale House. In 1984, Sean started his craft pottery at Ballydougan and within a few years Ballydougan Pottery became known as one of the most innovative craft studios throughout Ireland. Over the years many awards and accolades have been presented to Ballydougan in recognition of its contribution to Craft, Tourism & Corporate & Social Responsibility.

Ballydougan’s team of Potters, have been producing a large range of decorative and functional pottery for many years. Our range of strong and distinctive designs have become our trademark. Every piece of work reflects the tradition and durability of stoneware pottery. From the raw clay each Potter will skilfully produce timeless pieces of pottery finished to the highest standards. Our extensive range of Pottery is both functional and fashionable. It includes traditional Dinner and Tea services.

Ballydougan is pleased to offer Gift Shops an on-line catalogue for information and ordering purposes. At Ballydougan, our pottery is hand-made and hand-decorated, so each piece is unique and therefore slight variations between similar products may exist. This is part of the charm and character of hand produced pottery.

Pottery Workshop

At Ballydougan we offer Pottery demonstrations, workshops, classes and parties.  Classes for individuals and Groups are available throughout the year at which you can “throw a pot” on the potter’s wheel, or create an individual piece using hand-building or sculpturing techniques or just relax and “paint-a-pot”. Special seasonal themed workshops are also available. Alternatively you are welcome to book a class or workshop at a time which is convenient for you or your group.  

Group Visits to Ballydougan:

For Groups Visits, Church or Community outings etc. a demonstration and tour of the Pottery lasting 45 minutes is a fascinating way to gain an insight into the tradition, skill and process of creating hand-thrown pottery. A Potter will demonstrate the art of creating hand-thrown pottery explaining the techniques involved. You will also receive information on the history of Bloomvale House, home of Ballydougan Pottery.  Duration 45minutes. Advance Booking essential.

Birthday Parties, Hen-Parties, Family Celebration or Get-Together:

Make someone’s birthday or celebration very special this year and have a creative & fun Party at Ballydougan Pottery.

Paint-A-Pot Session: In the Pottery Workshop a Potter will demonstrates the process and all Guests then paint-a-pot (Mug) using various glazes, techniques etc.  Pots will be fired and can be collected from Pottery approximately 4 weeks later. Session lasts 1.5 hours. Suitable for age 5 upwards.

Before or after your Party various Menu options available in Restaurant.

Throwing on the Potter’s Wheel:

Suitable for an individual or 2 – 3 persons, one-to-one tuition from the Potter provides an opportunity to develop “throwing” skills. Pots will be fired and glazed for you to collect approx 4 weeks later. Session lasts 1.5 hours.     
Optional finishing session allows you to glaze your pieces.

Hand-building with Clay:

An opportunity for everyone to get their hands dirty!  After a brief tutoring session you will create your own masterpiece in clay using hand-building techniques such as slab building, coiling and modelling. These will then be fired and glazed for you to collect approx 4 weeks later.   Session lasts 1.5 hours.     

Drop In "Paint a Pot" Classes

During the school holidays “drop-in paint-a-pot” may be possible. Please telephone to check availability.

Creative Weekends:

Weekend courses are available for groups of adults with accommodation provided in our self-catering cottages. Ideal for Families, Hen-Parties, Team Building Sessions and those seeking a short break. So for a truly unique experience join us at Ballydougan for a weekend of creativity and enjoyment.
